A Viña Skyline
January 2003

Okay, it isn't really a skyline. The tallest building in the village is two-stories.

Skyline?
View of A Viña from the north. In the foreground is their parish church and cemetery.

A Viña is a village is about 4km south of us. Marivi and I stop by there often to have a coffee, buy a newspaper, or buy bread. It used to be the commercial center for this rural area back in the days when there were almost no roads around here. One road that did exist ran from a 2-lane highway to A Viña. There was even a movie theater.

Today, folks are able to get to the larger towns for their shopping and that pretty much spelled the end of business in this village. It's population has dropped and now there are a plenty of vacant buildings. What was once the movie theater is now used as someone's storage building. There is still a small restaurant, two or three café-bars and a "supermarket" there. (The market is about the size of a 7-11 but it's associated with a large chain of supermarkets.)

In addition to the market, the village is served by several delivery vans. At least three bakeries deliver fresh bread there daily. A fish market brings fresh seafood there once or twice a week, as does a frozen food company. For anything else, the residents have to drive into town.
