No More Plowing the Hard Way?
December 2000
No more plowing!

The 79-year-old farmer slaved away most of his life behind an ox pulling a plow. When he hit the national lottery ("big time", as Dubya says) it didn't take him long to decide what to do. He built this house and, when his ox died, buried it beneath this phony headstone. He then cleaned up and painted his two plows and leaned them against the headstone to signify that he'd never have to work so hard again.

The old coot, a widower, stays here in the summer but lives the rest of the year at a resort on the Costa del Sol, reportedly with 23-year-old blond twins from Finland. His housekeeper and gardener maintain the place while he's gone.

(THAT'S MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT.)

Or, if you prefer the truth: This house is about a quarter-mile from us and has been empty since before we started building ours. It's owned by someone in Lapido, a village a few hundred yards behind the house. They've always maintained the yard and just recently painted the house for the first time.

Even more recently, the owners added the two plows, which are propped against what appears to be a gravestone. We've never met the owners, so we don't know why they put the plows in the front yard. I suppose it could symbolize never having to walk behind a plow again.
