Tiulfe Tour
July 03

View from in front of our place
That's Tiulfe, the settlement to the south of us, as it looked at 9:00PM on a June evening.

We can barely see Tiulfe (pronounced "tee-OOL-fay") from our place because of the eucalyptus trees between us but it's only 200-300 meters south of us. The picture above was taken from the field in front of our house. Tiulfe is considered a lugar, which is a settlement or hamlet too small to be called a town.

On June 26th I took a walk through Tiulfe and took pictures wherever I could. The streets are narrow and the houses are right next to them so there were a lot of spots that weren't suitable for picture-taking. But maybe you can get an idea of what it's like from the photos below.

Casa Quemada

Tuilfe is higher in elevation than most of Ambroa and can be seen from miles away, depending on whether there are trees obscuring the view. The house to the right is located at the edge of Tiulfe and is the most visible structure in Tiulfe from a distance. (That's it just to the right of center in the top picture.) It's a beautiful example of a restored and modernized stone house of the type found all over this part of Galicia. Inside, what was originally a stable was converted to a large living room that might make you think you're in a first-class country inn.

The owners are currently adding a stone front porch and restoring their stone-framed horreo, which is visible behind the house, near the right-hand edge of the picture.

Can you find Adolfo?
Our little mutt friend, Adolfo (circle), is tied up these days
Other side
On the road at the other side, leaving Tiulfe

Tiulfe was a cluster houses, mostly stone, for a long time before three newer houses (including ours) were built nearby. The three newer houses are officially part of Tiulfe now, although some long-time residents might not think of them that way because of their separation from the original settlement. In our own case, "city hall" asked us whether we'd like to be registered as part of Tiulfe or La Granja, the settlement around Ambroa's church. We're located about half-way between the two and we arbitrarily chose Tiulfe. So our street address is "Tiulfe, 30".
