Fiesta Tradition
October 2007

Ambroa Parish celebrated this year's summer San Ramon fiesta on August 31st and September 1st. It has become a tradition that Marivi's mom and sister, Rosa, join us for the fiesta weekend, along with their cousin, Manolo and his wife, Pilar. They all live in Ferrol, but Manolo is originally from this area and has family and friends here.

The tradition also calls for Marivi to come up with an especially big, fancy meal for all of us. She's a damned good cook and, again this year, she put on a spread of popular Galician dishes that we all enjoyed.

Lunch on the bandstand 1
We had fine weather both days, so we had lunch out on the bandstand.
Bart and Arnie joined us, hoping somebody would toss them a scrap
now and then. (Bart learned a long time ago that Marivi's mom is usually
a soft touch, so he sits near her.)

enjoying langostinos, which are large ocean crayfish,
according to the dictionary.

Lunch on the bandstand 3
In Galicia, shellfish such as shrimp and longostino are served whole,
head and all, so they're eaten with the hands. Above, Marivi and
Rosa are showing why you need plenty of napkins.
(That's not for me, though. I prefer a fork, so I had "gambas al ajillo", pre-peeled, de-headed shrimp cooked in oil, seasoned with garlic.)

View from the bandstand
We can see the parish fiesta site from our own bandstand. That black object
in the center of this picture is one of the orchestras' stages, where they'll
be playing at night.

We all had plenty to eat, after which I took my customary siesta. (I suspect I wasn't the only one who did.) At the fiesta site, the shows started at around 10:30PM. We didn't walk over there to see the music being played - we could hear it just fine from home.

They played until a little after 5:00AM. I'm too old to stay out that late, even after a siesta!
