San Tirso 2004
Feb 04

Ambroa Parish held its annual San Tirso fiesta on Saturday and Sunday, January 24-25. These winter fiestas are always smaller, less elaborate (and less costly) than our summer San Ramon fiestas. The custom is to have a short vermut sesión Saturday after a Mass, then dancin' and drinkin' that night, followed by another vermut sesión after Sunday's Mass.
It's still standing Unlike our summer fiestas, which are open-air affairs, winter fiestas are held under a big tent because the odds are that there'll be bad weather. This year's tent (right) was erected next to the building and was well anchored against the wind.

Back in 2001, a windstorm blew in overnight and destroyed the tent. Click here to see the result.

Madeira
The band "Madeira" played both sessions on Saturday.
A trio played for Sunday's shorter, two-hour session.

Night music
"Madeira" changed clothes for the night session.
Despite appearances, there really is an audience.

Standing back
Audience at the other end of the tent. (The bar's on the left.)
They're back there because the band was really loud.

Tripping the light fantastic
After a few drinks, folks moved closer to the band and danced.
(I apologize for the poor quality of these night photos)

Saturday night at 10 PM, when the music started, only a few people danced, but eventually a lot more did. The fact that the "dance floor" was rough asphalt didn't seem to slow them down.
