Each fiesta day (summer and winter) begins with a Mass and each fiesta Mass ends with a procession. Following the procession, everyone walks over to the fiesta site , has a drink or two and listens to the band that was hired for the fiesta. You have probably seen pictures of the large processions in the streets of large cities in Spain and elsewhere. Well, our procession is a lot smaller but the principle is the same. In our case, the route is one lap around the parish church. It's a very old tradition dating who knows how far back. Several hundred years, for sure. As shown in the pictures below, there are four figures carried around the church: the Virgen del Carmen, San Tirso, the Virgen del Rosario, and San Ramon. (Not necessarily in that order.) The parishoners follow the figures around the church, with the men generally walking behind the women for no particular reason. When they get back around to the church door, the priest says a few words to end the ceremony, after which the figures are returned to the church's altars. |
