San Ramon 2002 - Page 2
October 2002

Since Day 2 of the fiesta fell on a Sunday, and folks had to go to work the next day, we expected the turnout to be smaller than Saturday night's crowd. After all, these things run on into the wee hours of the morning. But if Sunday's crowd was smaller, it couldn't have been by much.

The Second Day
Vermouth Session - Day 2
THE SECOND DAY'S SESIÓN VERMUT

Costamar group

Music for the second day's Vermouth Session was provided by a small, relatively unknown group typical of the type that plays at smaller fiestas. That means (to me, at least) that there are no brass or woodwind instruments - just a synthesizer or two, maybe a drummer, some guitars plus the singers/dancers. The group that played for us ("Costamar") is shown at the right. In this case, they hired only for the vermouth session and not at the night's main event.

There were two "name-brand" groups for the evening session. One of them ("Armonía") was more like a stage show than a musical group. They opened with two gals in Vegas-type skimpy, feathery costumes dancing to the band's music. (See photos below) Throughout their show, the singers were accompanied by a group of dancers and the audience seemed to enjoy it. Marivi and I weren't all that impressed with them, though. (The energetic male dancers did a lot of moving around like 'sissy-boys' on crack cocaine.)

The second group to play this night was a professional orchestra (with singers) that concentrated on producing good music undiluted by showy dancers. "Sintonía de Vigo" (shown below) is one of the most popular groups to make the rounds of Galicia's fiestas every summer.

The main events for these fiestas don't even start until 10-11PM and they run on until 3-4AM. Marivi and I surely weren't the only ones who were pooped in the morning. We didn't stay until the bitter end either night, but we came close enough.
