Pumping Up
July 2002

Well location At the risk of boring city folks who might be reading this, here's a little more about a subject that's important to us aldeanos who live out in the country.

We told you last year about having a second well drilled. At the time we didn't get the pump installed because, among other reasons, we had nothing to connect to it. This year, we installed pipes around the perimeter of the lot and in June - almost a year later - we had the pump installed.

The well is about 50 meters deep and is located at the south edge of the lot. That's about the same depth as our first well, on the opposite side of the lot. The first well will still be used for household water, but we've put in a valve that allows us to use the new well, if necessary. The new well is just for irrigation right now.

In the picture above, right, Marivi is watching as the experts (Sondeos Venezuela, SA) prepare the pump and pipe for installation. As you can see, it was a grey day, and it turned into a thunderstorm shortly after they finished.

The pump
Marcos held up the pump for the picture. It's a 2 HP submersible job that's more than twice as powerful as the pump supplying the water to the house.

Droppin' it in
Dropping it into the well. The pump, power cable and 40mm pipe go into the well and are suspended from a nylon rope that's tied to the wellhead.

Pump
The above-ground hardware. The large metal bulb on top contains a bladder that smooths out changess in water pressure as the pump cycles on and off.

Hosing and base
The metal housing is typical for well pumps around here. I'll paint it and mount it on the concrete pad when the cement dries.
