Ancient Bridge Revisited
1 April 03

About four years ago we posted some pictures of this Roman-style bridge across the Rio Lambre. Nobody seems to know when it was built but it's generally agreed that it dates back to the Middle Ages or even earlier. The bridge is located in the tiny settlement of Lambre, which is adjacent to the village of Ponte do Porco, which is on the outskirts of the town of Miño.

Back in 1999, it was obvious that the bridge had been neglected for quite a while. Its sides were overgrown with ivy-like vines and the entrances at both ends were big mud puddles. But despite its age, its roadbed is wide enough for small cars to pass over it. (We saw one small van cross it while we were there.)

Sometime within the past year or so local officials apparently recognized the bridge's historical significance and decided to do something about preserving it. They cleaned it up, removed the surrounding brush and small trees, paved the entrances, and closed it to vehicular traffic. Marivi and I are glad that they did.

We recently visited a similar bridge here in Ambroa Parish. This one crosses the same river and is located at another settlement named Lambre. It appears to be of the same vintage as the bridge on this page.
