Ponte do Porco's Picnic 2001
Whether It Rains or Not
September  '01

In 1999, Ponte do Porco's annual picnic was held outdoors. Last year, rain forced it indoors at the last minute. This year, the weather looked iffy ... it was pretty cloudy and looked like it might rain. So the picnic organizers took no chances.

This year's picnic was held at a beach in Ponte do Porco, where the raging waters of The Mighty Rio Lambre meets the sea. (The Lambre is the river running through Ambroa Parish, where we live.)

It's in the tent
See the picnic?   No?  Well, it's in that big tent on the left. (That's the Mighty Rio Lambre on the right.)

See, here ir is!
Here it is.    That's a covered bandstand on the left.

Happy Birthday What's a picnic without music?
This young lady is playing "Happy Birthday" for someone on her gaita. She continued for a while, playing popular songs people knew, and they sang along with her.

The organizers had hired a three-piece combo to play a little later. The combo played upbeat Spanish, Mexican and Caribbean music. (They also played a Spanish version of "Achy Breaky Heart" for the Billy Ray Cyrus fans in the audience.)

During much of their performance, several small kids got onstage and danced to the music, much like they've seen on TV music programs.

You don't have to play conga music
Are you old enough to know what a conga line is?   Well, the music doesn't have to be a conga anymore.
