That poor, downtrodden dog on the left is Otto. The picture was taken shortly after he had surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left hind leg. He was already overdue for a bath and a haircut when he injured himself jumping off a porch step. His morale was low because of the injury and the surgery. The long, dirty hair probably didn't help any.

The picture on the right was taken a couple of weeks later. By that time, the stitches and lampshade were gone and he'd had his haircut. He's still got a pronounced limp but his spirits are up, partly because of the healing and partly because he's clean. (It's too early to know if he'll eventually get over the limp.)
