Another Medieval Bridge
April 03

Sunday, the 9th of March was a nice day so Marivi, Rosa and I went looking for an old Roman-style bridge that a neighbor said was back in some woods near us. We found it about a half-mile north of the settlement of Lambre, here in Ambroa Parish. This narrow bridge crosses the Rio Lambre, which runs through Ambroa Parish down to the ocean.

A muddy road runs to the bridge and continues through the woods on the other side. There were recent tire tracks on one side of the bridge but none that we could see on the other side. The only traffic crossing the bridge is probably an occasional tractor or truck going into the woods. There's not much reason for other traffic here, since there's another (paved) road connecting both ends of this muddy road.

Find the bridge?
Can you find the bridge in this picture?

Find the bridge now?
Look closely. That's Marivi standing on it.

The other side
The other side. It's hard to see because it's overgrown with ivy.

Across the bridge
On the other side, talking with a neighbor whose family
owns the land off to the left side of this picture. The bridge
is in the background. The ground is covered
with leaves (mostly eucalyptus).

We haven't run into anyone who knows when the bridge was originally built but everbody seems to agree that it dates back to the Middle Ages or even earlier. It's a shame that the bridge isn't cleaned up and maintained as a significant historic site.

There's a similar bridge downstream near the mouth of the river. Oddly enough, it's located at another small settlement named Lambre. To avoid confusion, the settlement nearer to us is sometimes referred to as "Lambre de Ambroa".
