New Growth
September 2005

Last September the owner of some land next to us hired a crew to cut down all the pine and eucalyptus trees on the land. Pictures of the result are here . Since then, nothing else has been done on the property, but more eucalyptus is growing anyway.

As you can see, after just one year the new growth is already a lot taller than I am. The damned things grow like weeds. In fact, I think they are weeds instead of trees. If you've ever seen all the litter around a stand of eucalyptus, you know they obviously don't need bark to survive, like real trees do.

But eucalyptus has become an important cash crop for local owners of otherwise unused land. It grows fast and is harvested for sale to pulp mills. Most owners replant right away but the land baron who owns the land next to us doesn't live around here and it may have been decades since he last set eyes on this particular piece of property.
