Marivi's First Crop
May 2004

We finally decided to start a vegetable garden this year. It's still pretty cool so Marivi has just planted leaf-lettuce so far.
The spot we picked is sheltered from the prevailing winds. It's only about 16X20 feet in size but that ought to be plenty. We know people with similar (or smaller) gardens who end up giving away part of what they grow. Since neither of us has a green thumb we probably won't have to worry about having too much. We had to kill the prairie grass (with Paraquat) in the back yard first. Then we had to till in some lime to raise the pH of this acidic soil. Then a lot of raking - dead grass and a jillion rocks. Today (April 16th) a friend with plenty of experience came over and showed us how the planting is done around here, starting with ten lettuce plants. We'll plant more as the weather warms up. |
