Cruceiro
April 2000

![]() This photo was taken near one end of the pavement that runs past our house. (The village of Tiulfe is at
the other end.) That's the parish church in the background. The tall thing near the middle of the picture is
a granite Cruceiro.
Long before there were any paved roads, Cruceiros similar to this one marked intersections of roads and footpaths. This one happens to be within sight of the church but that's a coincidence. The elderly gentleman who tends the church says this Cruceiro was erected in 1781. To the left, a road runs past the new fiesta ground to the main roads. To the right there's a very narrow road that runs through a tiny settlement. This second road was just a path through the woods when, as a little girl, Marivi visited relatives about a mile from here. She used to walk with her family to this church. The road running back past the church becomes a footpath a short distance beyond the church. The footpath leads to the Village Smithy, where the pavement resumes and leads to a main road. A few old stone houses across from the church are mostly empty. |
