Church Key
Aug ' 01

Churchkey - won't open a can of beer The woodwork in our parish church was replaced recently. That included new pews, windows and doors. The church, San Tirso de Ambroa is several hundred years old so there's no telling how many times this work has been done before, but it was overdue for it to be done again.

This picture was taken at the front entry. The door is new but the lock isn't. It was on the previous door and no telling how many others before that. We were glad to see that they kept the old lock when they installed the new doors.

Nobody can tell me how old the lock really is, but 200-300 years is probably a conservative guess. That key moves four 1/2-inch diameter cylinders into an iron plate on the opposing door to lock up the place.

About 50 yards away, there's a huge, old stone house where the area's monks used to live when the Church owned the land around here. It's front door has an almost identical lock and key. That house is now occupied by an elderly couple who are the Church's caretakers.
