Una Broma

After getting a pump for the 2nd well,
we painted the little enclosure before installing it. The intent was to match the color of the chainlink
fence beside the well. But we noticed later that it also matched the color of the John Deere tractors that are
popular around here.
This parish is like a very small town, in that everyone knows what everyone else is doing. I figured this little enclosure might attract attention because it's the only one for miles around that ever got a coat of paint. (The rest are left in their original galvanized state.) So I decided to conduct a little "social experiment". I printed out some pictures of the John Deere label on our lawnmower and Scotch-taped them to the enclosure. The well is far enough away from the fence that the Scotch tape wasn't visible. The idea was that, eventually, we'd probably get some feedback about somebody's remark about it. That was on a Saturday afternoon. The experiment was finished within 24 hours. On Sunday,
at the parish
Laconada
a neighbor made a point of coming over to Marivi and me to ask about it. He wanted to know if the pump itself
was made by Deere or just the enclosure. (His family uses a Deere tractor.)
If I was a better liar, I could have told him that the
pump, the enclosure, or both were made by Deere. I think he would have bought it, at least until he checked
and found out Deere didn't sell those things. Instead, I told him it was just una broma (a joke or a
jest) and asked him not to tell anyone else. But you know how those things go. The cat was undoubtedly out of
the bag so I just took this picture and then peeled the labels off.
In case you city slickers haven't seen these little
tin houses, this picture shows how the top swings open in case you need access to the pump. |
