All Saints Day

It's customary here to put fresh flowers on the family panteones on All Saints Day. Some people do it all year round - once a month or so. The photos below were taken at our local cemetery on 10/31 (Halloween) and 11/01 (All Saints Day), when almost everybody does it. |

Religious holidays are busy times for local flower growers and florists. Out here in the country, some people decorate their family graves with flowers they grew at home. Others have to buy them somewhere. And there's no shortage of place you can buy them. There are large commercial growers and small family businesses selling flowers year-round. There are usually a few flower vendors at the "farmers markets" that are held once or twice a week in smaller towns. And on special occasions, such as the day before All Saints Day, they'll set up their stands whether or not it's a regular "market day." (The picture on the right was taken in the the Betanzos town square on the day before All Saints Day.) Here in Ambroa we have friends who run a commercial nursery not far from the local church. They not only sells flowers but will also deliver them to the cemetery and put them on the panteones at no extra charge. |
